Wedding Supplier Spotlight: Weddings by Sally Rose

Wedding photography is probably the most contenscious choice you will make when it comes to making a final decision on who you want to capture one of the most special moment in your lives. I know when we got married it was a minefield - I even set up a spreadsheet with pros and cons. The one thing that got overlooked on the spreadsheet ultimately became the most important thing and it is the best advice we can give to anyone getting married. You need to feel a connection with your photographer, if you don't you are not going to get the shots you desired. You need to feel comfortable around them and vice versa.

For todays wedding supplier spotlight we shine a light on the talents of Weddings by Sally Rose and let her discuss more about herself and how she works at a wedding as well giving some top tips on things to consider in regards to photography on the day itself.

Let's dive in.....

Before getting down to the nitty gritty why don't we start we something fun, tell us about a personal passion of yours.

Oh that's an easy one to answer I love traveling and going to festivals. I've been going to Glastonbury since I was 18 months old - music is in my blood for sure. I'm so sad to be missing the 50th anniversary this year but can't wait for it to return next year - fingers crossed!

What do you do and why do you do it? What makes it so special to you?

So basically I am what is referred to in the industry as a "General Practitioner" Photographer - this basically means that I photograph lots of different types of subject. My main branch of work is in the wedding industry but I also cover fashion shoots, beauty imagery and even celebrity based work. To have a look at some examples you can find these on my dedicated website sallyrosephotography.co.uk

As soon as I started photography at college I just fell in love with it! Along with this I was getting really good feedback for my work which obviously encouraged me to keep going. I knew really early on I wanted to stick with it and hopefully make it into a career. Which I'm pleased to say I've done! Every shoot I do is different and photographing weddings is especially rewarding. Being able to capture important moments that couples will look back on for ever really means a lot.

I love photography and photographing people - so weddings are ideal. Everyone is always in a good mood too so it's lovely to be surrounded by that as part of my job.

What is it that makes you stand out to couples looking to book their wedding photographer?

Personally I think couples really like my relaxed and friendly approach and that I like to capture a lot natural photos of guests having fun! I think it's nice for couples to be able to look back and see all their guests having a good time. Along with this my images are quite clear and colourful. I like to pay attention to the lighting as I think good lighting is really important in all great photos!

Can you talk us through about the process leading up to the day.

So ideally the first point of contact will be via email where we would normally arrange a consultation to discuss through the couples photography needs for their big day, at present due to COVID-19 these consultations can now be carried out online thankfully. We talk through all the key points and they get to see examples of works as well as the wedding albums I offer. If the couple wish to proceed with booking my services I like to get my couples to fill in a form with all the key details about their day. On the form I have advice too, so I like to send it out straight after couples book so it gives them time to think about the photos and ask any questions they might have. I'm always available for couples to chat if they have any questions when planning their wedding. For couples needing a bit of a practice in front of the camera to help relax them before the big day I offer portraiture sessions where we can find what works we for them as a couple and let them loosen up a little -trust me it really helps!

How do you see COVID-19 effecting weddings in the future?

I'm hoping there will be more outdoor weddings! I love shooting outside and due to COVID-19 they are looking to change the law to make outdoor weddings legal in the UK much sooner than was originally planned to happen in 2021. I think this change is long overdue and will be really positive for the industry as a whole - the diversity of ceremonies and locations is going to be so fun to shoot!

Wedding planning can be stressful so what tips can you offer as a photographer?

I'd say talk to your photographer about timings for photos and the kind of photos you'd like. Your photographer can help you understand how long they might take and if you want to spend that long on formal photos. Also paying attention details like having a tidy room when the photographer arrives for bridal prep.

As a photographer who has shot lots of weddings we get to see all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on that couples don't tend to notice as much. We know a few secrets here and there so any advice we tend to give is down to experience of witnessing all types of scenarios - from great to not so great. So if we work together we can try and avoid any pitfalls or overcome any obstacle that may come up. Another tip I'd give is to remember it's your day! You don't have to stick to traditions. Choose the ones you like and ditch the ones you don't!

Obviously with weddings being postponed at present due to the pandemic suppliers have had some pretty turbulent times to straddle. What have you been doing to keep busy or even diversify?

It has certainly be a trying time but I've recently been offering doorstep shoots and socially distance shoots for families, pregnancies, newborns, engagements, birthdays etc. Even in stressful times I believe documenting points of happiness are definitely needed as these are the things that keep us all going. I've really been enjoying them and I'm definitely planning to continue with family shoots as things return to normal!

I'm also offering Original Wedding Date Shoots - for all the couples that have had to postpone their weddings. I think it's important to still doing something special on the original day! Plus it give couples an excuse to dress up and get used to being in front of the camera.
